E-Commerce in the food sector

It is no secret to anyone that in recent years e-Commerce has had a great boom in the food sector due to its great advantages, among them we could say that one would be its comfort at the time of purchase, since we can do it easily via computer or mobile. That is why, every day companies reinvent themselves with multiple strategies to offer a better service and achieve customer loyalty.

However, this sector has great challenges to fit into this model. In this post we will deepen how this sector has grown in E-Commerce, and what will be the challenges that they have as companies in this aspect.

The food sector

To start talking about the food sector, we must start from the fact that each one of the sectors has different needs, that is, that food, in its particular case, has some factors to face, such as, for example, the complexity involved in sending food to the consumer’s home.

Another of the challenges that the food sector faces when it comes to establishing sales through the online channel are the habits of consumers, since many of them opt for the traditional route when buying. However, with the aforementioned, we do not mean that, in Spain, for example, online shopping is not carried out for this sector, in fact, by 2020, electronic food consumption grew by 71.6%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

How to face the challenges?

One of the primary challenges for this important sector is to gain consumer confidence with a guarantee and quality of service. But how to achieve it? Here are some ideas:

  • It is important to evaluate the costs, with the aim of offering offers of online products such as water, milk, soft drinks, among others. In order to compete with physical stores.
  • Offer quality, since it has been proven that the percentage of buying online is lower when it comes to products such as fruit, meat and fish. One of the solutions would be to guarantee the quality of these products in home delivery.

The general objective is to provide an efficient shopping experience and offer different delivery service alternatives in order to finally achieve the success of the food sector in electronic commerce.

The pandemic and the food sector

An important aspect to take into account is that the pandemic has created an environment conducive to breaking down some of these barriers mentioned above, when buying online. According to statistics, in 2020, nearly three out of ten Spaniards made at least one food purchase online. This represents ten points more than in the previous year (2019).

In summary…

The food sector faces great challenges within eCommerce, in fact, its success will depend on great factors. However, by generating trust in the service and taking advantage of new technologies, they will be able to overcome them and achieve end customer satisfaction every day.
